The integrity of our educational and research missions is essential to our work here at HMS. As most of our day-to-day work is executed or enabled by IT systems – from laptops and mobile devices to high-performance computing platforms – threats to those systems endanger our mission.

To protect against these threats, HMS IT requires that you install and enable antivirus software on any Harvard-owned or grant-purchased system connected to the HMS network or used to conduct HMS business. This requirement helps protect your data and the data of the HMS community.

For quad-based faculty and staff at HMS, HSDM, and Wyss, ESET Antivirus must be installed on any Harvard-owned or grant-purchased system connected to the HMS network or used to conduct HMS business. You can learn how to check if ESET Antivirus is installed, then install the software if needed.

Starting with Windows Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft has included anti-malware in the Windows operating system. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows 10 and is active by default.

If you are using macOS and are not eligible for ESET Antivirus, we recommend free antivirus protection from Avast One.
