Access Claude, ChatGPT Edu, and Microsoft Copilot

Generative AI can support your research, teaching, and daily work. HMS provides one AI tool per eligible user, along with continued access to the Harvard AI Sandbox.

To get started, complete the AI tool training. Completing the training will unlock the request form, where you choose your tool.
Eligibility
Email-eligible Quad-based employees, MD students, and DMD students may use one AI tool.
Security and compliance
Each tool runs in a secure, Harvard-approved environment, and none of them use your data to train vendor models.
You can use these AI tools with Level 3 data and below. Do not use any tool with Level 4 and Level 5 data.
Comply with additional regulations such as HIPAA, FERPA, and sponsor-specific data requirements. For research, align AI use with guidance from NIH, COPE, and other relevant bodies.
Available tools
HMS IT provides three AI tools, each suited to different kinds of work. This AI tool comparison can help you choose which best suits your work.
Claude is good for long, careful work: literature summaries, manuscript and grant drafting, organizing and analyzing large documents and datasets, and coding. Faculty researchers, postdoctoral researchers, research and lab staff, and software developers may prefer it.
ChatGPT Edu is well-suited to teaching and study. It provides custom GPTs for courses and case examples, image generation, and flexible content creation across a curriculum. Teaching faculty, students, and library or knowledge-management staff tend to prefer it.
Copilot Premium works inside Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams. It's good for managing meeting notes, email, and calendars. Administrative, finance, and executive staff may find it most useful.
Gemini is not available through HMS.
Getting started
Complete these steps to start using an AI tool:
- Complete AI tool training. Training covers data security levels, citing AI-generated content, and effective prompting.
- Get Sandbox access. Completing training automatically activates your Harvard AI Sandbox account.
- Request your tool. Choose Claude, ChatGPT Edu, or Copilot Premium.
- Wait for provisioning. Requests are processed by HUIT and can take up to five days.
- Sign in. Use your HarvardKey to access your tool.
Change or upgrade your tool
After 30 days of consistent use, you can request a change or add another tool, up to twice a year. After 60 days of consistently reaching limits, you can also make a one-time change to a higher-capacity version of Claude for sustained, heavy use. Once you move to the higher-capacity version, you cannot change back.
