Your eCommons account can get locked out if you type the wrong password too many times, or if you don't update a changed account password on all of your devices. You also must update a new password with the various systems and services such as:

  • eCommons and MyCourses
  • MARS
  • PeopleView
  • Fileshareing
  • HMS Private Wireless network (WiFi, Ipad, tablets, or laptop etc.
  • HMS VPN
  • HMS email (OWA, MS Outlook, Entourage)
  • Mobile devices such as IPhone, IPad, Droid etc. that has an HMS Email account configured
Locked Departmental Account

If you are locked out of a departmental email account, please contact the HMS IT Service Desk at 617-432-2000 so that a Service Desk Representative can assist you.

Locked Personal Account

Accounts must have SafeCode, HMS’s security system for resetting passwords and unlocking accounts, set up before any of the methods below can be used.

If you are not signed up for SafeCode you will need to call the HMS IT Service Desk at 617-432-2000 for help unlocking an account or resetting a password.

  1. Go to https://ecommons.med.harvard.edu
  2. Log in with your eCommons username and password
  3. If the account is locked, you will see a button that says, to unlock, Click Here
  4. Click Unlock Account
  5. Enter the two words/text that appears on the screen and Click Send New CodeNote: The 6-digit code that will be sent to you will only be valid for short time
  6. Retrieve the code from either your text-enabled phone or alternate email address
  7. Enter the 6-digit code in the space provided and click Submit
  8. Your account will be unlocked
  9. Click the Login Now link to redisplay the eCommons login page
Password Expiring Soon
  1. Log in with your current password at https://ecommons.med.harvard.edu
  2. You will be prompted that your password is due to expire with an option to reset it
  3. If above message does not happen, click on Preferences and then Security and choose Change Password
  4. You will be prompted to enter two words or text before a SafeCode is sent to your listed SafeCode device. When you confirm the code that is sent to you, you will be able to change the password
Change Your Password
  1. Log in with your current password at https://ecommons.med.harvard.edu
  2. Click on Preferences and then Security and choose Change Password
  3. You will be prompted to enter two words or text before a SafeCode is sent to your listed SafeCode device. When you confirm the code that is sent to you, you will be able to change the password
Forgotten or Expired Password
  1. Go to https://ecommons.med.harvard.edu and click on I forgot my password link
  2. Enter your eCommons user name or email address and click Submit
  3. Validate your information and click Submit
  4. You will be prompted to enter two words or text before a SafeCode is sent to your listed SafeCode device. When you confirm the code that is sent to you, you will be able to change the password
