Use fingerprint, facial recognition, or a PIN instead of a password to access HarvardKey and HMS apps.

Passwordless sign-in is faster and more secure than passwords and traditional two-factor authentication (2FA). You can now use biometrics or a device-specific PIN to access resources protected by HarvardKey or your HMS account. HarvardKey and most HMS apps will require passwordless sign-in by the end of 2026.

Set up Okta FastPass through the Okta Verify app on your computer or mobile device.

Why passwordless sign-in matters

Okta FastPass, built into the Okta Verify app, replaces the password-and-push-notification step when you sign in. FastPass uses a secure key stored on your device, combined with biometrics or a PIN, to verify your identity. Because authentication is tied to your specific device, it cannot be intercepted or replayed, even on a convincing fake sign-in page.

Okta FastPass also speeds up your daily workflow. Instead of typing a password and waiting for a second prompt, you authenticate with a single biometric or PIN on the device you are already using. The experience stays consistent whether you are in the lab, at your desk, or working remotely.

If you already use Okta Verify for HarvardKey, you can use the same app for your HMS account — no need to manage separate sign-in methods.
