Creating a Shortcut on a Macintosh

A file server shortcut will enable you to click or double-click an icon to connect to the file server. You can create shortcuts in the Finder window Sidebar, in the Dock or on your Desktop. Each method is outlined below. Choose the one that best suits your needs.

Sidebar Shortcut

  1. Make sure you are connected to the file server.
  2. Display the folder you want to create a shortcut for.
  3. Drag the folder from the Finder window contents section to the window's Sidebar.
  4. Sidebar icons can be placed in any order you wish. When dragging the icon to the sidebar a blue line will indicate where the icon will be placed when you release the mouse.
  5. To reconnect, simply click once on the icon.
    Note: If you haven't already authenticated/logged into your computer, you will be prompted for your log in name and password.

Dock Shortcut

  1. Make sure you are connected to the file server.
  2. Display the folder you want to create a shortcut for.
  3. Drag the folder from the Finder window contents section to Dock.
  4. When placing items in the Dock, they need to be placed:
    • To the RIGHT of the divider line that separates applications from the Trash and other document and folder icons, if the Dock is on the bottom of the screen;
    • UNDER the divider line that separates applications from the Trash and other document and folder icons, if the Dock is on the left or right side of the screen;
  5. When dragging the icon to the Dock a space will "open up" for the icon to indicate where the icon will be placed when you release the mouse.
  6. To reconnect, simply click once on the icon.
    Note: If you haven't already authenticated/logged into your computer, you will be prompted for your log in name and password.

Desktop Shortcut

  1. Make sure you are connected to the file server.
  2. Display the folder you want to create a shortcut for.
  3. Drag the folder icon to your Desktop.
  4. To reconnect, double click on the icon.
    Note: If you haven't already authenticated/logged into your computer, you will be prompted for your log in name and password.
